MPEG-4 Compression Technology Joins Seon

When digital video recording first appeared, it transformed the way people stored recorded video. With greater storage capability and better picture quality, digital video recording ensured that movies could be kept for longer without compromising picture quality over time. Every year since then, hard disk size has increased and formats have changed.

The advent of any new technology often represents even more convenience and efficiency in the way people live and work. It is no different with the latest in the world of digital recording – groundbreaking MPEG-4 compression technology.

More storage

Compared to current formats, users can now store up to 15 times more video using MPEG-4. The improved storage efficiency means that users can record at 30 frames per second (FPS), the highest possible for standard video. With this capability, viewers can now watch recordings with the same clarity they would experience if they had seen the incident themselves

Exploring the future of digital recording

Seon Design Inc. is happy to announce that we have added the Seon Explorer®  Digital Video Recording System, a high-performance system driven by the super-efficient MPEG-4 compression technology, to the Seon digital solutions family.

Designed by Seon engineers and manufactured in Seon`s facility in North America, the Seon Explorer DVR has the ability to capture higher quality recordings for a longer period of time than systems running on other technologies.

The Seon Explorer uses MPEG-4 compression technology to store higher quality recordings on the same amount of hard disk space as a recorder using less innovative and lower picture quality technology. The Seon Explorer is able to record four channels with each camera recording at 30 FPS. And for even better efficiency, each camera can be set at its own frame rate. This is especially useful when better quality pictures are required for areas where incidents tend to occur more frequently.

Footage available when you need it

Similar to the Seon Trooper® DVR system, the Seon Explorer also features hot-swappable hard drives. This means that the hard drive can be swapped with another while the DVR is powered. This is useful when the vehicle has to continue its course after an incident has happened but the recording is required for immediate playback. With this hot-swappable feature, users do not have to go without recordings for an extended period of time.

In addition to allowing video downloading directly from the hard drive, the Seon Explorer also features a USB thumb-drive for download. To make things even easier, the Explorer also comes with a one-touch download button that allows users to transfer video with a single key-press.

Easy access and extra information

The Seon Explorer also comes with Ethernet functionality that allows connection to a Local Area Network (LAN) or the Internet, and an optional GPS receiver (read about GPS) which records vehicle route and location. Other Plus features on the Explorer include vehicle information recording, which displays up to five signals on-screen, providing valuable information in case of accidents or unforeseen incidents. The signals are brake, warning, left turn, right turn and stop-arm for school buses, and wheelchair lift or similar signals in the case of transit buses, motor coaches or rail.

Big responsibility

When it comes to large fleets of buses, or multiple rail systems with dozens of rail cars each, the significance of the extra capacity of the Explorer system becomes quite meaningful. With the Seon Explorer onboard, users will find that they have more available recordings to review when an incident has occurred. Very often, video playback is required to reveal what had actually happened to support or refute eyewitness testimony. Human memory is simply not able to recall images with the kind of reliability that digital video recorders can, especially in the event of a traumatic incident.

This larger storage capacity and superior picture quality of the Seon Explorer makes it more convenient and time efficient, particularly for organizations that are very security conscious, for example, mass transportation authorities that become dependent on video surveillance systems due to limited budgets for security personnel.
